Cheer Fundraising and runDisney Sale Update

As you may recall, a month ago I offered up my runDisney treasures as "donation perks" for certain dollar amounts donated towards my daughter's 2014 - 2015 cheer costs. A twist on traditional fundraising, I decided to turn to a global community of supporters - people who give so others can continue to dream - and created a crowdfunding page on my blog.

As the cheer fees due date nears, I am beyond thankful and surprised at how well received this fundraising effort has been. I cannot thank you all enough for your kindness, generosity and support. Friends, family and the runDisney community never cease to amaze me.

Through pure non-perk donations AND perk donations on this blog, we have raised a total of $205.00 (minus Stripe fees and shipping overage fees). Additionally, via the sale of the runDisney shoes on eBay, we raised an additional $289.30.

The biggest cash draw was the sale of the New Balance runDisney shoes. I knew that even at $310 the shoes would sell, being that they are the limited edition, highly coveted first NB / rD collab which are no longer available. When the shoes didn't sell here on the blog, I hesitantly listed them on eBay where they could be viewed by a broader audience.

The pitfalls of eBay selling were exactly what I thought they would be. Shipping was a guessing game, and the fees were hard to pre-calculate and disappointing when I was finally billed. The shoes did indeed sell, the lucky auction winner paid a total of $352.45 for the shoes - quite a bit more than I was asking for here on the blog. However, I knew there would be big costs tied to using eBay and PayPal, and I was very correct. Below is the breakdown of that transaction. While I am grateful the shoes sold, I would not use eBay again. I feel like a donor on my blog would have a received a better deal and I would have spent less on shipping if able to communicate openly with the buyer. Not to mention the fact that it took 2 weeks to receive the funds from PayPal / eBay even though the buyer paid me immediately. Another reason I would not recommend eBay for your fundraising efforts.

  • Final shoe auction price: $335.00
  • Shipping Fee (calculated by me): $17.45
  • Subtotal: $352.45
  • PayPal Fee: -$10.52
  • Actual Shipping Cost: -$22.68
  • eBay Fee: $-35.35
  • Total I received for shoes after fees & shipping: $283.90

I am beyond thrilled, thankful and shocked at how much money we have raised! The final payment to the school is due May 31st and I am confident I will be able to write the check for the full amount due.

Again, I cannot thank you all enough for your kindness, generosity and support. I would not hesitate to deem this crowdfunding experiment a success given the amount of funds we were able to generate with the items available as gifts. I am happy the traditional methods of fundraising will always exist and always be beneficial. I mean, just look at how many tubs of cookie dough Starlight was able to sell! You cannot deny the power of the cookies and chocolates. However, I now believe that traditional methods, combined with social media and crowdfunding with "donation perks", is a fabulous new option for parents to consider when raising funds for sports and other student activities.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or for assistance and tips with your own fundraising. We're all in this together!

I'm not sure how the miscalculation occurred but we have updated the ticker accordingly.]
