As a member of the Chick-fil-A Mom Panel, I am able to hear about exclusive Chick-fil-A news and participate in special promotions throughout the year. This Valentine's Day they sent me the gift of Chicken Tortilla Soup. Yum!

With the rainy weather we've had recently, this was a most welcome gift and I was excited have the soup for lunch.

Chick-fil-A challenged all members of the Mom Panel to use our creativity and upcycle the soup containers after enjoying a tasty bowl or two. I created a Día de los Muertos altar and a Shadowbox using items I already had. Below are tutorials to show you how to upcycle your Chick-fil-A soup containers! #ChickfilAMoms #ChickfilAMomsDIY

DIY Dis de Los Muertos Altar from Upcycled Chick-fil-A Soup Containers

Create a festive, colorful Dia de Los Muertos altar that is adorable enough to display all year long. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated throughout Latina America as way to celebrate the lives of the deceased with food, parties and all the fun activities enjoyed by the deceased during their lifetimes. The altar serves as a welcome sign to the souls of lost loved ones.

What you need:

  • Chick-fil-A Soup Container
  • Stickers, beads, scrapbooking kits, small toys, etc. (Use what you have at home to save money!)
  • Your own image or art as the centerpiece or a loteria bingo card
  • Glitter spray paint
  • Glue gun
  • Small foam square (to mount the photo in the center of the soup container)
  • Newspaper to protect area from spray paint
  • Pushpins for moutning

Loteria Cards

Loteria Cards

Instructions:

  • Image: Measure the space of the center of the soup container to determine your photo size. Draw or print your photo to the specified size and ensure it fits before beginning project. Play with the photo until it's just the right size. (I printed a photo of my ceramic DIY sugar skull to use, but decided to use the loteria card instead. I scanned the card into my computer, reduced the size and printed.)
  • Soup Containers: Hand wash thoroughly and dry.
  • In a well-ventilated area, lay down newspaper to protect ground and spray paint the inside of the containers lightly and evenly. Be careful to not spray on thickly, as the paint could run down the sides of the container and pool in the center. Allow to dry 24 hours.
  • In a well-ventilated area, lay down newspaper to protect ground and spray paint the outside of the containers lightly and evenly. Allow to dry 12 hours. (This worked for me as I used a very thin layer of paint on the outside of the containers.)
  • Decide where you want to place your adornments before gluing them down. Remember that your photo will be raised in the center (that's what the foam is for) so you can place items behind the photo to add to the three-dimensional effect.

  • Once you have decided where you want to place all the altar decorations, begin gluing the items down.
  • After gluing all the items down, glue the piece of foam to the center of the soup container in the middle of the raised area.
  • Glue your photo on top of the raised piece of foam. You can see below that the photo I glued down appears to float above the center of the soup container.

  • Add stickers to the outside of the soup container.
  • Double check that everything is glued down perfectly.
  • Allow the glue to dry.

Enjoy your masterpiece! Dia de Los Muertos altars can showcase anyone or anything you choose. Make one with a photo of a loved one or a beloved pet to give as gift to a family member.

Mounting Instructions:

  • The altar can be easily mounted by inserting a pushpin just behind the top of the floating photo. The photo is tall enough to hide the pin.

  • Push gently until the altar is flush against the wall.

DIY Shadowbox from Upcycled Chick-fil-A Soup Containers

Bring your scrapbook tools & skills to life by making a shadowbox out of upcycled Chick-fil-A soup containers. Rather than just create beautiful scrapbooks that only you get to see and enjoy, make a shadowbox by using a photo from a recent vacation or milestone event. Here I used a photo of my mom from Castaway Cay during our trip to the Disney Social Media Mom's Celebration. I can't wait to give this to her on Mother's Day!

What you need:

  • Chick-fil-A Soup Container AND lid
  • Photo
  • Same items and tools as above

Instructions:

  • Soup Container AND lid: Hand wash thoroughly and dry.
  • Image: Measure the space of the center of the soup container to determine your photo size. Print your photo to the specified size and ensure it fits before beginning project. Play with the photo until it's just the right size.
  • Follow the same instructions as above for the Dia de los Muertos Altar
  • Last step: Glue the lid of the soup container to the back of your finished product

Mounting Instructions:

  • The shadowbox can be easily mounted by inserting a pushpin into the top corners of the soup lid.

When the shadowbox is mounted on the wall the image, stickers and glitter really pop. This is a fun way to commemorate an event and would make an unforgettable DIY Mother's Day or thank you gift.

Thanks to Chick-fil-A for challenging me to think of a new and creative way to upcycle these soup containers. I love their Chicken Tortilla Soup, I love making things, I love repurposing items and I love glitter. This project was a win!

Have you tried the Chicken Tortilla and Chicken Noodle soups at Chick-fil-A? Which is your favorite? My favorite is the Chicken Tortilla but I recommend them both!

Love & Light,
xox jindy
