Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Halloween Half Marathon Race Recap
Last weekend I drove down to Los Angeles for the final stop of my California race tour: The Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Halloween Half Marathon. I was really looking forward to this race, already having put in a ton of miles last month between the Nike Women's Half Marathon and the Rock 'n Roll San Jose Half Marathon and 5K.
The best part of this race was the fact that it was a destination race. There are so many things to love about Rock 'n' Roll races, but for me that's the greatest part. Each race is a new course in a new city filled with new experiences. Although LA isn't new to me at all, I took the time to run through downtown, eat at LA Live, visit Disneyland for Halloween Time, catch a movie at the El Capitan Theater and do a little college campus touring.
The Expo on Saturday was a breeze! I was in and out in record time and set out to enjoy my LA day.
After a fun day of running and walking, I made it to bed early enough to get in a good night's sleep before the race. I woke up early race morning and took the red line train from my hotel to just before the start line. (I hopped off an exit earlier than I needed to because I wanted to warm up.) My hotel location was excellent and the transportation in downtown LA is great. I went straight to The Farm of Beverly Hills to enjoy the VIP Experience. I was warmly greet by the staff at the door and invited inside to this yummy pre-race feast!
Soon, I was at the start line ready to go dressed as a SF Giants fan. I mean, it was a Halloween costume race!
Despite the heat, I was staying on pace and doing really well. I enjoyed the course and all the great music. However, at mile 9 I realized that my Nike watch and my RunKeeper app had both erroneously tracked me as being at mile 10. That just completely threw me off and I was bummed. At that point I decided that instead of running for a PR - I should just have fun and take in the scenery.
It was hot, and I was really tired. I was disappointed in myself for having spent so much of the days leading up the race running and walking around so much. My pace was slow, but I kept running until finally - the finish line was in sight!
After the race, I made my way over to the bonus medal line to get my Cali Combo medal. That's when I saw these awesome ladies. Loved their costumes!
Once my precious medals were in my hands, I walked back to The Farm of Beverly Hills for my post-race VIP Experience. The set-up was fantastic! There was left over goodness from the morning along with pasta, a variety of breakfast burritos, water, beers and mimosas.
Because I had a 300 mile drive ahead of me, I just had 1 mimosa before hitting the road. Hard to only have one when they are bottomless! After eating, spending time with friends and the one drink, me and my CEP Compression socks hit the road!
The Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Halloween Half Marathon medal is probably one of my most favorite medals earned in all of 2014 - after the Cali Combo medal of course! I'm just so immensely proud of myself for accomplishing my goal of earning the Cali Combo medal! It's gorgeous.
Did I like this race and this course? Yes! Would I ever run this race again! Yes, BUT only if I had friends with me. I think this race would have been even more fun for me if I'd had a partner in crime over the weekend. Also, the heat was not horrid, but not great. Having a buddy to take my mind off the weather would have been a great distraction. So gather up your best buds and register for this one in 2015!
